This week, Bev Priestman announced her final roster for 2023. Notably, Jeneva Hernandez-Gray has earned her first senior call-up. She replaces Marie Alidou, who has been dropped from this camp—Priestman said it was “unfair” to continue to call her up when she wasn’t seeing the pitch. Emma Regan was not selected due to injury; while initially named, Evelyne Viens and Julia Grosso picked up knocks throughout the course of the week for their club teams, and will be unavailable for the camp. To replace them, Priestman has named Dijon forward and former youth team player Latifah Abdu, and Sophie Schmidt will now be available for both matches as she ends her international career.

In good news, both Janine Beckie and Desiree Scott will be with the team as they continue their return-to-play protocols.

This also marks a full calendar year since Marie Levasseur and Ella Ottey were called up to the senior team; as such, we will no longer cover them after this week.

UWCL

Vanessa Gilles played 60 minutes for Lyon in their 2-0 win over SKN St. Poelten. Lyon continues to sit at the top of Group B with an impressive +11 goal differential. In Group A, Marie Alidou played the full match for Benfica in their narrow 1-0 win over FC Rosengård, keeping them off the bottom of the table. In Group C, Evelyne Viens started for Roma in their 3-0 win over Ajax; unfortunately, she suffered an ankle injury in the 72nd minute and was forced out of the match. This injury has also ruled her out for Canada this upcoming week.

Canadians were involved in both Group D matches. Returning from injury, Clarissa Larisey saw her first bit of UWCL action as she entered in the 87th minute for BK Häcken in their 2-1 comeback win over Real Madrid. All three Canadians who play for Chelsea started the match for the first time this season as Chelsea beat Paris FC 4-1. Ashley Lawrence played the full match, whereas Kadeisha Buchanan and Jessie Fleming were subbed off in the 83rd and 46th minutes, respectively. BK Häcken sits atop of the group, with Chelsea in second.

Due to her injury, Viens was not in the squad for Roma as they beat Fiorentina 2-1. Then, it went from bad to worse for Canadians in Italy as Juventus’ Julia Grosso was subbed off in the 8th minute against S.S.D. Napoli due to an ankle sprain. Juventus went on to win 3-1.
