CONCACAF W Champions Cup

Kailen Sheridan’s San Diego Wave faced off against Christine Sinclair and Jessie Fleming’s Portland Thorns in the “marquee match-up” of the group stage. Whilst Sinclair remained on the bench, Fleming played 75 minutes for the Thorns. The Thorns seemed to be in control before letting a 2-0 lead slip, and Sheridan and the Wave bounced back to win 3-2.

Emma Regan played the full match for HB Køge in their 2-1 win over Kolding.

England – WSL

The 2024-2025 WSL season kicked off this week, starting with a Canadian Clash as Aston Villa took on defending league champions, Chelsea. Sabrina D’Angelo starred in net for her new club, making key saves and almost scoring herself in her Aston Villa debut. She was unable to keep the clean sheet, however, and she and Adriana Leon fell 1-0 to Chelsea; Leon entered off the bench in the 66th minute. Ashley Lawrence and Kadeisha Buchanan both played the full match for Chelsea.

Manchester United started their season well with a 3-0 victory over West Ham. Jayde Riviere played the full match for United, and Simi Awujo made her professional debut as a substitute, entering in the 77th minute. For West Ham, Shelina Zadorsky entered the pitch in the 60th minute.

Olivia Smith made her WSL debut with a start for Liverpool in their match against Leicester City. Smith played 70 minutes; on the other side, Deanne Rose entered in the 66th minute for Leicester. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

France – Division 1

Vanessa Gilles started the season on a good note, playing the full match and scoring one goal for Lyon in their 6-2 win over Fleury. Latifah Abdu did not make her debut for her new club, Guingamp, as she was listed as unavailable for their 6-0 loss against Paris FC.

Italy – Serie A

Lysianne Proulx was once again backup keeper for Juventus in their 2-1 win over Lazio. Évelyne Viens started Roma’s match against Como, scoring a brace before exiting in the 66th minute. Roma won the match 3-1.

Portugal – Liga BPI

Melissa Dagenais was backup keeper for Damaiense in their 2-1 loss against Braga. Marie Alidou scored one goal and played 82 minutes for Benfica in their 4-0 victory over her former team, Famalicão.

USA – NCAA

Laurence Gladu continued their strong season for USC, earning clean sheets in a 1-0 victory over Purdue and a 2-0 win over Indiana. Returning from the U-20 World Cup, Annabelle Chukwu continued her good form, scoring the lone goal for Notre Dame in their 1-0 win against Virginia. Anna Karpenko remained on the bench for Georgetown in their 1-0 win over Creighton. For Harvard, Jade Rose also didn’t feature in their 2-2 draw against Santa Clara.

USA – NWSL

Kansas City started off the week with a commanding 3-0 victory over Washington Spirit. Nichelle Prince started for Kansas City and scored their first goal—also her first for the club. Desiree Scott entered as a substitute in the 86th minute. For Washington, Gabrielle Carle played the second half.

Racing Louisville continued their good form with a 2-1 win over North Carolina. Janine Beckie played 68 minutes for Louisville, and Bianca St-Georges entered in stoppage time for North Carolina. Once again, Sydney Collins remained unavailable due to injury.

Houston Dash eked out a rare victory, winning 1-0 against Seattle Reign. Sophie Schmidt did not feature for the Dash, but Allysha Chapman played the full match, helping the Dash keep their clean sheet. For the Reign, Jordyn Huitema and Quinn both played the entire match.

Julia Grosso and the Chicago Red Stars earned their second victory in a row, winning 1-0 over the San Diego Wave. Grosso played the full 90, and Sheridan was in net for the Wave. For Utah, Cloé Lacasse went the distance in their 1-0 loss against Gotham FC.

Portland Thorns snapped their losing streak with a 2-2 draw against Angel City. Fleming played 78 minutes for the Thorns, and Sinclair exited in stoppage time having earned the hockey assist on both of Portland’s goals. For Angel City, Megan Reid played the full match.

UWCL

This week, the first leg of the second round of qualifiers kicked off, and all Canadians found themselves on the winning side. Viens came off the bench for Roma in the 58th minute before scoring a brace to give the Italian side a 3-1 victory over Servette. Clarissa Larisey played 66 minutes for BK Häcken in their 1-0 win over Arsenal. Juventus upset PSG with a 3-1 win; Proulx was the backup keeper for Juventus. Alidou played the full match for Benfica in a 2-1 win over Hammarby, recording the assist on Benfica’s game-winner.
