National Team: Canada U20
In their second group-stage match, Canada’s U-20 team lost 3-0 to Brazil at the U-20 Women’s World Cup. Annabelle Chukwu and Kaylee Hunter both played the full match, with Chukwu exiting in the 64th minute and Hunter lasting the full match. The team rallied after that lopsided loss and defeated Tanzania 6-0. Chukwu played the full match and scored a brace, while Hunter came on for the second half and earned her first goal of the tournament. As one of the best third-ranked teams, Canada moves on to the knockout stages and will face France on Thursday in the Round of 16.
Canada
In the NSL, Montréal Rosees and AFC Toronto played to a 2-2 draw. Mimi Alidou played the full match for Montréal, and Shelina Zadorsky and Sabrina D’Angelo did the same for Toronto. Hunter was unavailable due to her involvement in the U20 WWC. Ottawa Rapid suffered a heavy 4-0 loss to Vancouver Rise; Melissa Dagenais was in net for the Rapid, but DB Pridham was once again unavailable.
England
Chelsea rebounded after a disappointing first-week match with a 5-0 victory over Manchester United. Kadeisha Buchanan played the full match for Chelsea, but was fortunate to avoid a red card after a studs-up tackle in the Blues’ box. For Manchester United, Jayde Riviere was unavailable, and Simi Awujo entered in the 62nd minute. Marie Levasseur played the full match for Birmingham City; despite going 2-0 up, they settled for a 2-2 draw with Brighton. Then, Arsenal played to a scoreless tie with Crystal Palace. Olivia Smith entered in the 60th minute for the Gunners. Finally, Jade Rose netted her first goal of the season, scoring the first for Man City in their 4-1 win over Aston Villa. She played the full match.
France
Florianne Jourde played 64 minutes for PSG in a 2-0 win over Strasbourg; she was a late addition to the starting XI after a teammate was withdrawn. OL Lyonnes slaughtered Paris FC 7-1; Ashley Lawrence didn’t play for Lyonnes, and Eveleyne Viens only lasted 57 minutes for Paris. Finally, Emily Burns was in net for Marseille in their 2-1 victory over Lens.
Germany
Vanessa Gilles helped rescue Bayern München, playing the full match and scoring their first goal as they came from behind to win 3-2 over Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
USA
In the first NWSL match of the week, Zara Chavoshi was an unused substitute for Orlando in their 2-2 draw with Kansas City. Then, Angel City and Denver Summit also played to a draw; the scoreline was 3-3. For Denver, all three Canadians earned the start. Emma Regan exited in the 71st minute, and Megan Reid and Janine Sonis both played the full match. Sonis also scored a goal for Denver, notching her 10th goal of the season.
Kailen Sheridan returned to San Diego as the North Carolina Courage played her former team. Sheridan was in net, but she and the Courage fell to the Wave 2-1. Carly Wickenheiser was a substitute for the Courage, entering in the 63rd minute. For the Wave, Brooklyn Courtnall earned the start and played the full match, and Adriana Leon was once again a late sub (81st minute). The Seattle Reign defeated Bay FC 2-0, but neither Canadian was too involved. For Seattle, Holly Ward came on in the dying minutes (89th). Sydney Collins didn’t feature off the bench for Bay. In Saturday’s last match, Cloé Lacasse played all 90 minutes for Utah in a 1-0 win over Houston Dash.
The Boston Legacy put on a show late in the match to triumph 3-0 over Washington Spirit. Nichelle Prince entered in the 60th minute for Boston and earned the assist on their first goal. For Washington, Gabby Carle played the full match, and Élisabeth Tsé remained on the bench. Chicago Stars also left it to the last minute, scoring a late equalizer to draw 1-1 with Portland. Jordyn Huitema was out for the Stars, but Julia Grosso played practically the entire match, exiting at 90+3. For Portland, Jessie Fleming played the full match and helped to force Chicago’s own goal.
In the USL Super League, Jordyn Listro played the full match for Tampa Bay Sun as they beat Fort Lauderdale 2-1. Finally, Chukwu was unavailable for her college team, Notre Dame, in NCAA action, but they also managed a 2-1 win over Clemson in her absence.
