England
In the WSL, Chelsea continued their winning streak with a 3-0 win over Liverpool. Kadeisha Buchanan played the full match for Chelsea, with Ashley Lawrence playing the second half. Olivia Smith went the full ninety for Liverpool. West Ham picked up their first three points of the season with a narrow 1-0 win over Leicester City. Shelina Zadorsky started the match for West Ham, and Deanne Rose entered in the 66th minute for Leicester.
In what could be described as a surprising result, Manchester United drew Aston Villa 0-0. Four Canadians featured in this match: Jayde Riviere played 78 minutes for Manchester United, with Simi Awujo entering in the same substitute window. For Aston Villa, Sabrina D’Angelo started and kept the clean sheet, and Adriana Leon also came in at the 78-minute mark.
France
Vanessa Gilles’ Lyon thrashed Latifah Abdu’s Guingamp by a score of 8-0. Gilles continued her impressive 2024 with a goal and an assist recorded in 60 minutes of play. Abdu played the full match for Guingamp.
Italy
The Round of 16 in the Italian Women’s Cup took place mid-week. Evelyne Viens entered in the 64th minute for Roma in their 6-0 thrashing over Bologna. Juventus also won their fixture against Hellas Verona by a score of 4-0. Lysianne Proulx did not feature for Juventus.
In regular league play, Viens played the full match as Roma won 1-0 over Fiorentina. Proulx was on the bench for Juventus’ 3-0 victory over Milan.
Portugal
Marie Alidou featured for 17 minutes in Benfica’s 2-0 win over Racing Almada.
Sweden
BK Häcken closed out the Damallsvenskan 2024 season with a strong 5-1 win over Brommapojkarna. Clarissa Larisey played the full match, scoring one goal and earning two assists. BK Häcken end the season in second place, and have qualified for the UWCL qualifiers for the 2025-2026 year.
USA: NCAA
USC lost in the Big 10 Tournament semi-final to Rutgers via a penalty shoot-out after ending extra time 1-1. Laurence Gladu was in net for USC. On the other side of the country, in the Big East Championship, Georgetown lost 2-0 to the University of Connecticut. Anna Karpenko was in net during the second half for Georgetown. Finally, Jade Rose did not play for Harvard in their 3-1 loss to Princeton in the Ivy League Tournament semi-final.
USA: NWSL
This weekend, the NWSL quarterfinals took place. The first match saw Shield winners Orlando take on Julia Grosso’s 8th-place Chicago. Grosso played 82 minutes for Chicago, but their season ended in a lopsided 4-1 loss. In the second match, Kansas City won 1-0 over North Carolina. Nichelle Prince and Desiree Scott entered as substitutes for Kansas City in the 75th and 82nd minutes, respectively. For North Carolina, Sydney Collins remained unavailable, and Bianca St-Georges entered the match in the 75th minute. Kansas City will take on Orlando in the first semi-final match next weekend.
Gabby Carle and the Washington Spirit held off Bay FC’s upset attempt with a comeback 2-1 win to send them through to the semi-finals. The match lasted 120 minutes as it was tied after the regulation ninety; Carle played the entire match. In the last play-off match of the weekend, Christine Sinclair’s playing career came to an end as the Portland Thorns lost 2-1 to Gotham FC. Sinclair and Jessie Fleming both started the match, and, perhaps in a fitting end, both Canadian captains exited together in the 66th minute. As a result, Washington will host Gotham next weekend in the second semi-final.
